oral cancer

Despite being little known, mouth cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer in the body. Every day in the Basque Country, 2 oral cancers are diagnosed, with a higher prevalence in men.

The main risk factors for oral cancer are tobacco, alcohol consumption and human papillomavirus. It can appear in any area of the oral cavity, although it is mainly located on the lateral edges of the tongue (sides), the floor of the mouth (under the tongue) and on the lips.

The warning signs or suspicion of oral cancer are any ulcer or wound that does not heal within 15 days, any tumor, difficulty swallowing, and white, red, or black spots on the mucosa of the mouth and tongue.

In oral cancer, like any other, early detection is very important, in the initial stages, since an early diagnosis drastically reduces morbidity and mortality.

Diseases of the oral mucosa

The mucosa of the mouth is made up of the inner surface of the cheek, lips, tongue, palate, gum and the floor of the mouth (under the tongue). They are frequent locations for the appearance of a heterogeneous group of oral diseases and disorders.

The diseases or disorders that most frequently affect the oral mucosa are:

– Potentially malignant oral disorders such as leukoplakia – white spots – or erythroplakia – red spots.

– Recurrent canker sores or sores that do not heal easily or are very frequent.

– Immune diseases such as oral lichen planus.

– Blistering diseases such as mucosal pemphigoid.

– Fungal infections -fungi- that do not resolve.

– Tongue diseases.

It is very important to evaluate any lesion that appears in the buccal mucosa since most have some clinical importance and sometimes may be important, potentially malignant disorders.

Burning mouth syndrome

Burning mouth syndrome is a chronic disorder that presents as a painful stinging or burning sensation on the tongue, lips and/or palate. This disorder is not serious, but it leads to great discomfort and loss of quality of life.

Many times it is underdiagnosed, which means that the patient who suffers from it cannot find a medical explanation for their ailments or any medical professional to help them adequately.

There are several treatments available, scientifically supported, to mitigate pain and greatly improve the quality of life of people who suffer from this annoying syndrome.

dry mouth syndrome

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia or dry mouth syndrome, is a common disorder among the population, especially in middle-aged women.

Lack of saliva can be due to many reasons such as certain medications, psychosocial factors, autoimmune diseases, and salivary gland diseases, among others.

Treatment has to be focused on the individual cause of each patient. In addition, there are treatments to stimulate saliva production and achieve adequate control and an improvement in the quality of life of patients who suffer from it.
